Ideation + Sketches

As a group we cycled through a large number of different forms and ideas. These included, initially - a surreal monster that panted comically with increased heat consumption; a chest cavity with clacking rib cage; a sculpture composed of ferro-fluids and magnets; a topographical landscape composed of a piece of fabric over a mechanism; and many others - before deciding on our final form.

Here are some pictures of a few of the many whiteboards we filled during our ideation phase.

Over the course of the project, we discussed mapping extensively. In terms of mapping, we had many questions. These included questions such as -
What period of time should the sculpture inform about? A week? A day? A month?
How much memory should the sculpture have?
What movement corresponds to increased consumption and which to decreased consumption?
Do we want to reward the user with increased movement or use increased movement to indicate increased consumptions?

You can see in our whiteboard sketches different ideas for mapping for each form.

Topographical forms and mechanisms that would create such forms. We also played with ideas of harmony and chaos,
conveyed through the formation of either a distorted or cohesive image (sketches on the right-hand side show this).

Here you can see our process of trying to find physical actions that correspond appropriately with varying forms of heat imagery.
This is the ideation board for a form that ultimately we did not continue with.
It involved inflatable plastic compartments that would be inflated in sequential order to inform
the user of their electricity consumption.
These are more ideas for the possible mapping and mechanisms for the inflatable air bag sculpture that we, again, did not continue with.

Once we decided on the arm mechanism, we discussed several applications for it.

We realized we would have to make the arms as light as possible so the motor would not have to fight gravity
too much. These are ideation sketches for possible cut-out shapes. We gravitated towards very organic, rounded shapes.
More sketches for possible mapping (bottom right corner) and cut-outs (top) for our current form.
Our group is also very interested in somehow incorporating fiber optics (shown below) into the sculpture,
as this would provide visual interest and would support the sculpture as a chandelier of sorts.
However, we are still investigating possibilities for this and it is not a confirmed component of the sculpture.
